FREMONT, CA: Nexenta, a provider of Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), has announced partnership with VMware to extend its support of VMware Hyper-Converged Software environments. NexentaConnect will now be operated with VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 to provide file services for VMware Virtual  SAN environments by adding NFS (network file system) and SMB (server message block) access on top of an existing Virtual SAN to complete the software hyper-convergence model.

NexentaConnect is a software suite whereas VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 is a software-defined storage solution. Together delivers the flexibility, simplicity and lowers the cost of ownership for the software–defined data center. The solution for VMware Virtual SAN brings high-powered NFS and SMB Virtual NAS (network attached storage) shared file services to hyper-converged VMware deployments, simply managed through vCenter server plug-in.

VMware Virtual SAN 6.2 is a rich storage platform for hyper-converged infrastructure optimized for vSphere virtual machines that is designed to meet the requirements of today’s most demanding enterprise applications. It is inclusive of all new data services and enhanced capabilities like deduplication and compression, performance metrics, Sparse swap files, in-memory caching and software checksum that can be applied individually to any application and are provided through storage policy management framework. It also features RAID-5/6 (Erasure Coding) capability that guarantees storage resource savings without compromising on data availability and visibility. The platform offers the operational efficiencies such as improving infrastructure agility, eliminating complexity, reduces the cost and increases the overall manageability.

NexentaConnect is a consummate suite of software solutions that integrates software-defined storage with cloud, enterprise and desktop deployments. It provides acceleration, automation and analytics that can only be distributed when storage is integrated with the entire solution stack to address storage challenges in desktop and server virtualization deployments.

Nexenta’s support for VMware ecosystems extends beyond NexentaConnect for VMware Virtual SAN, offering VMware interoperability across its entire OpenSDS portfolio. NexentaStor, the company’s flagship SDS solution, offers vSphere APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) support and multi-tenant management with a vCenter Server Plug-in for vSphere. NexentaEdge offers scale-out block storage with inline deduplication and compression for OpenStack and VMware vSphere.

“Nexenta joins us in providing organizations with the freedoms that virtualized environments allow. Coupled with our enhanced VMware Virtual SAN solution, NexentaConnect will strike the balance of high-performance and low cost that enterprise data ecosystems demand,” said Howard Hall, senior director, Global Technology Partner Organization, VMware. “Nexenta, in partnership with VMware, further extends its exclusive promotion from June 2016 with technical support for 12 months, allowing any validated VMware Virtual SAN customer to achieve file services via NexentaConnect.
