OTT Hydromet releases an optical nitrate sensor, the OTT ecoN, for use in environmental surface and groundwater applications.
FREMONT, CA: Responding to the global demand for better monitoring of nitrate in freshwater, OTT Hydromet launches an optical nitrate sensor, the OTT ecoN, for use in environmental surface and groundwater applications. This is helpful for scientists, water companies, catchment managers, regulators, and environmental consultants. Previously, customers have been caught between low-cost/limited-performance sensors and high-end technologies. The OTT ecoN fills that gap; as a continuous nitrate monitor, with minimal maintenance, it can be left to monitor in remote locations, and an optional wiper makes it best for extended deployments.
The OTT ecoN lowers the cost of ownership because it is factory calibrated for life. With automatic drift compensation, baseline checks with ultrapure water are fast and easy to perform and are required as an occasional test of equipment function. The OTT ecoN quantifies nitrate by the absorption of UV light at 212 nm and avoids the possible effects of organics and turbidity by measurements at 254 nm and 360 nm, respectively. As an optical sensor, the OTT ecoN offers high accuracy and low resolution without the drift and interferences of ion-selective electrodes.
The OTT ecoN can transmit data through an SDI-12 interface due to the OTT ecoN Modbus to SDI-12 Converter. The converter transforms the Modbus protocol for the OTT ecoN nitrate sensor to enable easy and continuous remote data access. Remote configuration can be attained to export data and configure the OTT ecoN through a web interface. No specialized software is needed to communicate with the OTT ecoN. An intuitive browser-powered user interface is accessed by connecting an interface unit to the sensor.
Measurements can be gathered internally within the sensor, but as a specialist in sensing, data logging, and telemetry, OTT HydroMet can provide the most appropriate monitoring system. This includes the choice of sensor because the OTT ecoN is available with various cell pathlengths to ensure optimum performance through all measurement ranges. However, OTT HydroMet can conduct a retrospective change of optical path length when customers require to change application, such as moving it from very turbid surface water to groundwater, for example. The OTT ecoN has proven highly accurate and reliable in the field and has been priced for extensive implementation.
