Pregine Revamps its RF Switch Model PE42723 with Enhanced Linearity

SAN DIEGO, CA: Pregrine Semiconductor, the patent distributor of Radio Frequency (RF) Silicon On Insulator (SOI) after the success of its PE42722 product line, has brought in major upgradation with UltraCMOS PE42723. PE42723 has all the inherited capabilities from its predecessor model PE42722. The revamped version exceeds the linearity requirements of the Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) 3.1 industry standard and enables a dual upstream/downstream band architecture in cable customer premises equipment (CPE) devices. PE42723 is an RF switch that owns the market’s highest linearity specification.

Designed on the cable applications that include DOCSIS 3.0/1 cable modem, set-top box and residential gateway, PE42723 is a Home Affordable Refinance Program (HaRP) technology-developed reflective Single Pole Double Throw (SPDT) RF switch. DOCSIS 3.1 standard was released in October 2013, thereby offers multi-gigabit throughput. DOCSIS 3.1 introduced considering the challenges in front of the cable industry such as constantly growing demand of the consumers for high-speed home data with extended support to the new linearity requirements and harmonics. Consumers are adopting the video-streaming services with a great pace which creates a pressure on the broadband ecosystem from CPE devices to the cable infrastructure. According to a study from Cisco Visual Network Index (VNI) up to 5 million years of video content will cross the internet each till month in 2019.

The PE42722 and PE42723 switches are brought into the industry to resolve the linearity challenges in form of DOCSIS 3.1. These switches proffer a unique approach to support dual upstream/downstream band architecture; earlier CPE devices had only supported either upstream or downstream band combination. Leveraging on the dual-band architecture cable industry standard and multi-service operators (MSOs), the product offers the newly expanded services to its customers. "DOCSIS 3.1 represents a giant leap forward in achieving multi-gigabit data rates," says Jim Koutras, Product Management Director, MaxLinear. "With their exceptional linearity, Peregrine's PE42722 and PE42723 RF switches simplify the transition from DOCSIS 3.0 to 3.1. The ability to support dual upstream/downstream bands in the same CPE device is a critical enabler to making DOCSIS 3.1 a reality." The PE42722 and PE42723 are the only RF switches which can fulfill the high harmonic requirements.

Highlighting features of the UltraCMOS PE42723 covers an extended range of 5-1734 MHz, with reflective SPDT RF switch. At 17 MHz the second harmonic is -121 dBc and the third harmonic -140 dBc, consisting of low insertion loss of .3 dB at 1218 MHz. The enhanced product also preserves noise figure and receiver sensitivity and achieves superior signal quality, along with providing high isolation of 54 dB at 204 MHz. The PE42723 model features 3 kV ESD protection on all pins. PE42723 is available in a small 12-lead 3 x 3 mm QFN package with volume-production parts, samples and evaluation kits.
