FREMONT, CA: Riverbed Technology, one of the pre-eminent WAN optimization vendors, launched new software-defined SD-WAN solution-SteelConnect that orchestrates application delivery across WAN infrastructure, LAN and cloud environment in hybrid enterprises, reports Chuck Moozakis, TechTarget. Riverbed SD-WAN solution promises fast, agile and secure delivery of applications.

Riverbed SteelConnect is poised to disrupt software-defined WAN space with the uniqueness of unifying network connectivity and orchestration of application delivery. The new SD-WAN networking solution includes the company’s operating system-SteelHead that can optimize applications across private WAN and can be deployed in Microsoft environment. Additionally, SteelConnect also incorporates a management portal, secure WAN gateways, remote LAN switches and Wi-Fi access points.

Curtailing the complexities of a hybrid world, SteelConnect also offers the ease of designing, setting up and managing modern networks from one location by connecting the users and the cloud with business data centers.

“They are trying to use this as a platform to manage IT within the branch; it's not just bringing all of these software-defined capabilities to the edge, but beyond that,” remarked Brad Casemore, Analyst, IDC.

The company’s new SD-WAN platform had been long under development leveraging the technology of its recent acquisition –Ocedo. The technology blends orchestration of application delivery in SteelConnect.

With the launch of SteelConnect, the legacy component SteelCentral platform will take a backseat. “It’s still an integral element, but it's no longer the whole story; with companies moving more of their applications to the cloud, it goes well beyond the areas WAN optimization is capable of addressing. You also need intelligent path selection, priority, [quality of service] and other features that will let companies manage cloud-based apps like Skype that need special treatment,” Casemore added. The projected market growth of SD-WAN space is $6 Bn by 2020. Acknowledging this growth, the launch of Riverbed SteelConnect sure looks promising.

Apart from the WAN optimization, Riverbed also offers solutions in the areas of Application performance monitoring, network performance monitoring, end-to-end performance management, SaaS and cloud performance, and hyper-converged branch. “We are also looking forward to ‘doubling down’ on cloud environments as well as our portfolio of solutions on Azure and other new Microsoft solutions,” said Judy Mirkin, Director-Microsoft Alliance, Riverbed Technology.
