Sequans Partners with Gemalto to Bring LTE Connectivity for M2M and IoT Markets
FREMONT, CA: Sequans Communications, a 4G chipmaker, announced partnership with Gemalto to integrate Sequans' StreamliteLTE chipset platforms into a family of wireless communication modules for the Machine 2 Machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) markets in U.S.
Their first product will be based on Sequans' Calliope Long Term Evolution (LTE) platform. LTE, commonly marketed as 4G LTE, is a standard for wireless communication of high-speed data for mobile phones and data terminals. The Calliope LTE Platform is a member of Sequans’ family of LTE chipset products designed specifically for wearables and other Category 1 M2M and IoT devices. Sequans developed Calliope to address the demand of M2M and IoT device makers for an LTE chipset solution that would work on today’s networks and allow devices to connect to the Internet of Things via LTE affordably thus solidifying the business cases for the wave of new devices now being invented. The innovative modules represent the steptoward true machine-type-communication and will allow easy addition of LTE connectivity to devices such as smart meters, alarm systems, asset trackers, remote monitors, M2M routers, telematics, and more.
LTE Category 1 (CAT1) devices provide significant reductions in cost, size and power consumption compared to their higher performance CAT3 and CAT4 counterparts found in today’s smartphones and other consumer mobile data devices. This cost and power reductions enables the rapid adoption of LTE technology in the Internet of Things, including machine-to-machine (M2M) and consumer wearable devices, where high throughput is not a key requirement.
"Sequans is an innovative and focused partner for us to start deployments of a new generation of technology leading towards true machine-type-communications. LTE technology has distinct advantages for the M2M space, for example, in size and power, and its Calliope chipset is an ideal starting point for smart, efficient, and cost-effective LTE M2M modules. Cooperating with Sequans we aim to deliver higher integration of the module with typical Gemalto competencies in SIM cards and security for IOT," said Norbert Muhrer, Senior Vice President M2M, Gemalto.
