Upp Upgrades Backhaul Network with Smartoptics Open Line Systems

With Smartoptics’ flexible open line systems, UK-based ISP Upp has improved its backhaul network. Smartoptics is a leading provider of optical networking solutions.

FREMONT, CA: The DCP-F enables the implementation of nearly any ROADM-based network topology by disaggregating formerly monolithic optical platforms into independent open line systems, switches with embedded transceivers, and transponders. Smartoptics, a leading developer of optical networking solutions, confirms that UK-based ISP Upp has upgraded its backhaul network using Smartoptics’ flexible open line systems. This is a critical component of Upp’s next-generation technology that powers its multi-gigabit fiber network.

“Upp are building high capacity DWDM backhaul to support its regional full fiber broadband roll-out.  We selected Smartoptics to power that backhaul based on the capability of their technology to meet our needs.  Smartoptics were very responsive to our requirements supported by Nova Incepta on the ground,” says Alex Marshall, CTIO of Upp, regarding the collaboration.

Upp is a new Internet service provider (ISP) in the United Kingdom with funding and plans to install a gigabit-capable Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network over 1 million premises in underserved towns and communities across the East of England by 2025. Upp required a more efficient and effective method of connecting and backhauling its access networks. The DCP-F dynamic connection technology from Smartoptics was utilized with their passive H-series solution to carry 1G, 10G, and 100G services. These Smartoptics solutions were chosen because they facilitated a cost-effective and straightforward active/passive network by one of Smartoptics’ primary UK integration partners, Nova Incepta.

Smartoptics open line systems are simple to construct and run; links are now operational.
