Using Healthcare Facilities To Promote World Hand Hygiene Day
Tork, an Essity brand, calls on healthcare organizations worldwide to establish an Institutional Safety Climate this World Hand Hygiene Day (WHHD), encouraging the development of hand hygiene role models and safer patient environments.
FREMONT, CA: In celebration of World Hand Hygiene Day on May 5, the WHO encourages healthcare workers to practice hand hygiene. The fifth component of WHO's Multimodal Strategy for Hand Hygiene Compliance, creating an Institutional Safety Climate, or an organizational environment that prioritizes high hand hygiene compliance to achieve patient and healthcare professional safety on an institutional and individual level, is the focus of this year's theme. To create an institutional safety climate and reduce healthcare-associated infections, healthcare employees must be well-trained and motivated (HAIs). Hand hygiene has been shown to prevent up to 50 percent of illnesses acquired during healthcare delivery in trials. Furthermore, according to Tork-commissioned research, 8 out of 10 healthcare personnel want to increase their hand hygiene compliance.
Tork developed its Clean Hands Training in partnership with behavioral scientists and world-leading experts in hand hygiene to support these healthcare professionals and enable safer healthcare environments. Tork VR Clean Hands Training immerses users in a digital world where they can interact and train in a realistic environment on the WHO's own "my 5 moments of hand hygiene." Since the end of 2019, Tork Clean Hands Training has been accessed nearly 15,000 times, empowering healthcare professionals to reach the highest safety requirements.
To prevent the spread of infection and limit cross-contamination, healthcare staff must practice hand hygiene frequently and adequately. Tork provides skincare for healthcare institutions, including the Tork Alcohol Hand Sanitizer, designed for crucial, fast-paced workplaces. Tork also provides evidence-based dispenser placement instructions based on WHO's "my 5 moments of hand hygiene" and tailored around four typical regions found in healthcare facilities to aid compliance. Hand hygiene dispensers have been shown to have a considerable impact on compliance rates, and the key to success is ensuring that they are appropriately located. The managing director of Essity Professional Hygiene stresses the importance of hand hygiene and how it is a collective objective of everyone in the healthcare industry to uphold these standards worldwide.
