Transforming Spreadsheets into Web-Based Solutions

The global insurance application market is growing rapidly amidst accelerating economic growth. Today, companies are investing in a plethora of tools and enterprise software solutions to increase productivity, facilitate compliance, and improve user experience. While spreadsheets are being extensively used in the insurance industry for rating and quoting, claim analysis and modeling, data collection, and financial reporting, they present acute risks— spreadsheets lack security, version control, and governance. To overcome this challenge, Pagos has developed the groundbreaking SpreadsheetWEB platform that is capable of turning complex spreadsheet into secure, database-driven, web-based applications. “When you look at the insurance application landscape, developing applications that encompass sophisticated proprietary models that are specific to their unique business challenges is a complex and expensive task,” begins Ugur Kadakal, CEO, Pagos.

With SpreadsheetWEB, enterprises can eliminate the risk and limitations of traditional spreadsheets and save countless hours of development. Pagos’ flagship product makes better use of existing user interfaces and facilitates power users to choose the UI portions of the workbook to automatically convert them into web-based user interfaces. “The calculation logic from the Excel spreadsheets can be turned into applications that can be consumed and integrated with IT systems. With SpreadsheetWEB, the most complicated part of the development lifecycle becomes the simplest,” asserts Kadakal. The platform meets the need of hyper-connected customers across all channels. By leveraging SpreadsheetWEB’s API, IT departments can transform classic Excel and Visual Basic Applications (VBA) into responsive, mobile-enabled web applications. “We have extended SpreadsheetWEB to support custom user interfaces, allowing our users to utilize the power of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript when designing their web applications, while the back-end logic is still managed in the Excel calculation models. These fully-customizable user interfaces will deliver a far superior user experience,” elucidates Kadakal.

Further, with the help of Pagos’ platform, enterprises can simplify database integration and allow users to share the updated workbook with agents without having to deal with download issues or version incompatibilities.

This is achieved by following a unique approach where SpreadsheetWEB stores only the input fields and specified calculated fields identified by the user, making the platform more efficient with database operations.

In addition, the company recently updated SpreadsheetWEB with Single Sign-On (SSO) via Identity-Provider Initiated (IDP) federated services integration. This enables enterprises to safeguard their access control by providing a singular authentication gateway for all of their web-based toolkits, while enhancing integration capability with other products. “Our corporate clients can seamlessly integrate SSO support with their internal authentication systems, giving them better access control over spreadsheets deployed on the SpreadsheetWEB platform,” says Kadakal.

With its innovative solutions, Pagos has empowered manifold companies to manage and control their business logic. For instance, one of Pagos’ clients, Southern Risk Insurance, had a hard time finding a rating system that would allow for quick changes to their rating factors, structure, and user interface. The biggest challenge for them was finding an application that integrated with Southern Risk’s policy management system. By leveraging a licensed version of Pagos’ SpreadsheetWEB software, Southern Risk was able to integrate spreadsheets with their policy management system via web services and efficiently handle all business logic and calculations.

For the road ahead, Pagos looks forward to empowering businesses with a web designing dashboard that can be utilized to create their own custom UI applications or connect existing ones to their SpreadsheetWEB calculation models. “We also look forward to expanding internationally where the usage of Excel and variability of algorithm is vast,” concludes Kadakal.
