Balancing Profitability and Sustainability by Reusing Electronics

As carbon reduction goals and ESG policies become the norm for businesses, prioritizing IT hardware sustainability is more important than ever. At the same time, organizations are looking for every possible means to extend the lives of their assets and reduce the total cost of ownership of their hardware infrastructure.

A woman-owned company with more than 30 years of experience, Sage Sustainable Electronics helps businesses meet their goals of balancing profitability and sustainability by extending the life of electronics.

Sage leads the market in sustainable IT asset management and disposition (ITAD) by reusing more and recycling less. With an end-to-end IT asset solution, the company delivers the most value to an organization and serves a range of stakeholders, including those in need.

“Our goal is not to recycle IT assets but to refurbish and find second users to extend the life of electronics. This produces the best sustainability and financial results for the customer,” says Robert Houghton, CEO of Sage Sustainable Electronics.

Sage’s core service is recovering surplus IT assets, refurbishing them, and finding second users. After recovery, the materials are taken to a Sage repurposing facility, where Sage reliably carries out data sanitization of all data-bearing devices.

“We produce data sanitization reports to demonstrate the successful completion of data eradication. Our customers are assured their sensitive data has been destroyed,” says Houghton.

Once the assets are sanitized, Sage refurbishes them and may reload software or perform repairs while indemnifying its customers against the high cost of data breaches. Houghton explains that there’s never been a data breach in Sage’s history, but it provides indemnification to give its customers peace of mind.

The objective is to repurpose recovered assets to either redeploy them for the customer or donate them to the customer’s choice of nonprofits and beneficiaries. Most of the material, however, is resold for value recovery, with the customer receiving the lion’s share of sales. Anything that’s not economical to repurpose is responsibly recycled.

Sage is a certified e-Stewards electronics recycler, which means they maintain full compliance with all national and international standards for the management of electronic waste.

Other services offered by Sage are asset management-related, such as technical installations and deinstallations of hardware, on-site data sanitization and shredding in data centers, as well as infrastructure decommissioning of power and network, allowing customers to reduce costs and redirect internal resources to more strategic activities.

Our goal is not to recycle IT assets but to refurbish and find second users to extend the life of electronics. This produces the best sustainability and financial results for the customer

Sage also has employee purchase programs in place, whereby the recovered material is made available for sale to the customer’s employees after it’s been fully refurbished. A one-year warranty is included, and all financial transactions and customer service are handled by Sage.

Sage has also stepped in to help customers with supply chain problems. With robust warehouse operations and distribution teams, they can receive and deploy new equipment.

Houghton is proud of how Sage solves two key issues facing organizations––net sustainability and economic outcomes from asset management programs. Sage was able to help one company successfully reduce its disposition costs by almost 50 percent within the first year. The economic returns to the customer from the combination of recycling less and selling more was substantial.

“A key reporting metric is greenhouse gas avoidance based on the reuse of assets. It can substantially contribute to overall greenhouse gas reduction targets,” says Houghton.

Sage’s reusable yield is orders of magnitude greater than its competitors, creating substantially superior results for a company’s financial and sustainability goals.

Unlike its competitors, Sage goes beyond IT asset disposition. Customers can count on it as a lifelong strategic partner that evolves as their businesses evolve.

Sage Sustainable Electronics Repurposing Center in Philadelphia Opens to Improve Global Sustainability

Thursday, September 26, 2024

Sage promises improved value recovery and sustainability for used electronics.

COLUMBUS -
Sage Sustainable Electronics today announced that it will open its fourth national repurposing center near Philadelphia in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania. Sage CEO Robert Houghton said the company’s objective is to help businesses retire old technology more sustainably, and with better value recovery.

"Two-thirds of electronics recycled for raw materials are still perfectly functional," he said. "When Sage extends the useful life of technology, we reduce environmental impact twenty-fold, and also return more money to our customers. Our Mission is to reuse more and recycle less," Houghton stated.

"Electronics is the fastest growing waste stream worldwide," said Ron Gonen, Founder & CEO of Closed Loop Partners, a circular economy-focused firm and Sage’s majority shareholder. "Our investments in the circular economy support companies like Sage which reduce waste and maximize positive environmental impact by keeping valuable materials in circulation and diverting them from landfills. Reuse plays a critical role in achieving these goals."

Executive Vice President Mina Izadi noted that for many businesses, data security eclipses financial and sustainability concerns. "It’s no longer necessary to choose between data protection and optimal financial and environmental results," said Izadi. "Sage quality of service, secure logistics and data destruction processes are demonstrably reliable and sustainable."

Sage will accept all types of corporate technology in Montgomeryville from its corporate clients, including endpoint devices, data center hardware, and mobile phones. Its reverse logistics services ensure that the removal of old technology from corporate locations is easy, timely, and secure. Sage supports the recovery of used tech from employees working at home through its parcel program in partnership with UPS Store locations nationwide.

In keeping with its motto "Long Live Tech," Sage performs repair and refurbishment services to prepare items for resale, redeployment, donation, and lease return. And while the company seeks to minimize recycling, as a certified e-Steward, Sage manages electronics recycling to the highest ethical standards.

Sage is a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher, updating PCs with genuine Windows operating systems before offering them for sale. "When you buy a Sage refurbished PC, you pay a refurbished price, but we deliver a new-device experience," said Izadi. "Refurbished computers are a reliable solution for families on a budget." Refurbished PCs and mobile phones are available for sale to the public at shop.sageSE.com.
