The Increasing Role in Infection Prevention for Asset Management

Seal Shield

Bradley Whitchurch, CEO
The impact of COVID-19 has evolved awareness and roles for almost every aspect of modern organizations today – and in particular, the role of asset management for high-touch fixtures, equipment and devices frequently contacted by employees and/or customers. Healthcare has long been aware of these issues, but now every organization must also consider potential medical-grade features and specifications in asset management planning.

In a healthcare setting, It is imperative to maintain a clean and sterile environment. Almost one in 31 hospital patients contract a healthcare-associated infection, according to the CDC. And evidence shows that many of these infections are transmitted through assets like keyboard, mouse, and mobile devices in the hospitals. When also thinking about organizations beyond healthcare, many of these same concerns remain. These assets have become a primary point for contamination and transmission of pathogens, and managing those assets and infections has become vital for healthcare organizations. As a leader in infection control for more than 15 years, Seal Shield provides a full range of products and solutions that mitigate the risk of cross-contamination within healthcare, hospitality, and all public and communal environments. With a mission to prevent infections, specifically, hospital-acquired infections, Seal Shield is synonymous with infection prevention through advanced research and development, strategic partnerships, and technology acquisitions.

Seal Shield provides an array of asset protection products to clients. “Hospitals are increasingly trying to fulfil two main goals to protect devices from an infection control standpoint and managing them from an asset management perspective. With our products, clients are able to achieve both their goals,” says Bradley Whitchurch, CEO, Seal Shield. The company’s ElectroClave UV-C Disinfection system uses UV-C LED light to disinfect mobile devices from an infection control view. Unlike other products that use mercury bulbs, Seal Shield’s LED technology uses a very narrow bandwidth of UV-C to avoid material degradation on the devices. The LED lights do not generate heat and enable the ElectroClave system to charge the devices while they are being disinfected. “Studies have shown that while hospitals make large investments in hand washing, these efforts are negated if they don’t have a solution for disinfecting mobile devices, which causes pathogen transmission. ElectroClave can solve this problem for hospitals,” adds Whitchurch.

What makes the ElectroClave system unique is that the company has developed a proprietary RFID backbone, allowing clients to track, monitor, and manage every device through a cloud portal for complete asset management.

Hospitals are increasingly trying to fulfil two main goals to protect devices from an infection control standpoint and managing them from an asset management perspective. With our products, clients are able to achieve both their goals

“We help clients prevent the loss and theft of their mobile devices with our RFID tracking,” says Whitchurch. The system can even send push notifications to those devices in the hospital. For instance, a device in a highly infectious ward gets a push notification saying all the devices of that area need to be disinfected every hour. Clients can also track compliance around infection control and asset management via the RFID software. Additionally, a huge benefit for IT personnel is that they can push hardware and software updates to their devices through ElectroClave system, which saves a lot of time.

Besides, Seal Shield offers a medical-grade, waterproof and washable keyboards and mice designed to withstand regular cleaning using harsh disinfectants and cleaners. “We manufacture our keyboards in 30 different languages and distribute them worldwide,” says Whitchurch. The company also offers advanced screen protectors that are compatible with medical-grade disinfectants, including bleach and disinfectants.

With the outbreak of COVID-19, Seal Shield is witnessing a significant demand for its disinfection products not only in healthcare but also in other industries such as corporate institutions, governments, education facilities, and food processing and distribution. “We are working with a lot of major restaurant chains and food producers, specifically with the anti microbial screen protector products for point of sale and deploying ElectroClave into other verticals outside of healthcare,” says Whitchurch. Moving ahead, Seal Shield is continuously looking to innovate its products to enhance its features. Notably, the company is developing a new version of ElectroClave specifically for disinfecting and tracking infusion pumps. Similarly, Seal Shield is looking at development around its chemistry and anti-microbial plastics.
