Ensuring Order and Efficiency in Transnational Borders with AI-based Solutions

Even after two decades, the 9/11 attacks continue to impact U.S. immigration protocols. By late 2002, the U.S. government had created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to protect the country from terrorism and possible future attacks. The establishment of DHS paved the way for a change in American attitudes toward security. It introduced the concept of ‘homeland,’ centering attention on an entire population that needs to be protected from threats. Fast forward to today! Although new vulnerabilities have emerged and the threat landscape has dramatically evolved, these unforeseen yet predictable threats and border vulnerabilities affect all countries.

This is where Securiport steps in. Founded in early 2000, the company is a global leader in solution-based intelligent immigration and civil aviation security services. “Our objective is to provide AI-based technologies and tools to governments, allowing them to track and regulate the travelers crossing their borders. We consistently provide technical support, maintenance, training, and system updates to ensure 24x7 efficiency and order,” says Dr. Enrique Segura, President and CEO of Securiport.

Securiport began its operations by using ultrasound fingerprint recognition—the most advanced biometric technology at the time—to accurately identify travelers, and soon evolved its services to harness the cognitive power of data analytics and intelligent information management to provide cutting-edge threat detection tools to effectively address its clients’ growing security concerns. For instance, based on the unique needs of the U.S. government, the company has incorporated five standard profiling categories—criminals, terrorists, human traffickers, drug traffickers, and money launderers—in its proprietary AI-powered tool. Based on these categories, Securiport’s experts have developed the capacity to identify risks and to determine whether an individual is a person of interest (POI) or not. The whole analysis is performed in less than a minute while the traveler is processed at immigration control or prior to arrival. Moreover, the system is fully tailorable to incorporate additional client categories as needed.

Securiport’sability to crosscheck data against watch lists from local and international security agencies with which its clients maintain relations, such as Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), or the FBI ensures even greater insight on travelers, especially when combined with the data obtained from various sources such as passports, identity cards, drivers’ licenses, court files, and touch-based systems.

Our objective is to provide AI-based technologies and tools to governments, allowing them to track and regulate the incoming and outgoing passengers crossing transnational borders

“Usually, these databases utilize different programming languages or platforms, but our tools help clients in unifying these national and international databases and associated capabilities in one place. We call it Structural Analysis. We don’t search, access, or infringe into protected or proprietary data, but we have the technical capability to run checks utilizing structured and unstructured data from multiple data sources,” adds Segura.

In addition to helping governments with border security and management, Securiport is also working to make travel safer and more secure for passengers. To that end, the company has several technological developments in the works to adapt to the rapidly changing post-pandemic world. “We’re currently developing contactless cognitive technologies, including fingerprint, iris, voice, and face recognition analyses to identify deceptive behavior including false or double identity cases. As the pandemic has highlighted the need for keeping travelers safe from probable contaminated surfaces, we’re also building solutions that would eliminate the need of passengers to touch surfaces, such as devices including kiosks” informs Segura.

Securiport continues to enhance its already comprehensive solutions with the latest search parameters. To improve the identification of POIs, the company is investing in R&D collaborations with multiple universities. Securiport is actively implementing advance passenger information (API) technology, contactless kiosks, and biometric recognition capabilities for several countries under ongoing projects worth $500 million. “Different nations collaborate with us because we provide unique capabilities at no cost. We also believe that governments are working as hard to maintain the safety of their citizens, residents, and visitors as they are tackling crimes and threats. That’s why we’ve made it our mission to provide the best-in-class border management and security services to protect nations from fraud, threats, and terrorism,” proudly concludes Segura.
