Mark E. Sloan, CEO of SynGlyphX, was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug at a very young age when—while still in grade school—he helped out at various family businesses.

Mark’s thirst for innovation grew over time, and ultimately led him to the Big Data space. Realizing that organizations may at times be overwhelmed by massive amounts of untapped raw data and by lack of integration across related data sources, he and Dr. Dave Warner founded SynGlyphX, a company that helps organizations make sense of complex data and take informed action.

Mark was “moved by the difficulties that companies had to go through just to collect, aggregate, and cleanse data–before they could even spend time making sense of it all.” This led to the formation of SynGlyphX, which helps synthesize (Syn), visualize (Glyph), and solve for the unknown variable (X).

SynGlyphX transforms the way organizations visualize and interact with data to uncover meaning and take informed action. In today’s business environment, users can be overwhelmed by an ocean of raw numbers and hard-to-read graphs and charts. SynGlyphX solves this problem by integrating large amounts of heterogeneous data sources into a single, visual display that is easily understandable. Mark explains that “our interactive, 3D visual environment effectively becomes a front-end to otherwise disparate, complex data sources.”

SynGlyphX visualization solutions can be used for visual data discovery and for facilitating the communications of findings to an audience.

On the data discovery side, the visual environment intuitively represents data that would otherwise be difficult to interpret–patterns, trends, and anomalies are easily exposed. On the communication side, SynGlyphX visualizations are used to communicate data findings to anyone from an entry-level analyst to a high-level decision makers. Mark explains, “Eye-catching, interactive 3D visualizations provide a nice alternative to more typical graphs and charts.”

SynGlyphX technology was architected by Dr. Dave Warner, an MD/PhD medical neuroscientist who focused on how the brain processes large amounts of complex information. Building on Dr. Warner’s work, the SynGlyphX visualization approach is informed by perceptual engineering–the optimal design of a visual environment to enable the user to more efficiently interact with and synthesize high-dimensional and complex datasets. This approach is supported by decades of academic and government-funded research on how the mind best understands and processes data. Mark explains, “We display data in a way that is intuitively meaningful to the user. Because people experience the world in three-dimensions, we display data in three-dimensions. Because people learn best experientially, our visualizations allow users to interact with the data.” This perceptual engineering approach differentiates SynGlyphX from more conventional data visualization tools and allows end-users to take action faster.

For example, SynGlyphX helped the Arlington County Department of Transportation address operational and infrastructure needs by integrating disparate data sources. Arlington County, VA—one of the most densely populated areas in the U.S.—collects large amounts of raw data on bicycle and pedestrian usage along its trails but like many local governments does not have the personnel or resources to conduct extensive analysis of this data. SynGlyphX brought that data to life by working with the County to visualize traffic patterns over time along the trails–incorporating everything from sensor data to weather data. These visual solutions enabled the County to better schedule repairs and plan for future infrastructure development.
