Smarter and Safer Construction Worksites

George Franco, Founder & CEO
It was October 10, 2012. An under construction parking garage collapsed in the blink of an eye, costing millions of dollars and the life of four on-site workers—the last of who may have been saved if his location in the debris was pinpointed ahead of time. Impacted by the news of this incident, George Franco, having vast expertise and experience in electrical engineering and construction, began to wonder if technology could be used in rescue and recovery operations and help to provide a safer, smarter worksite. This thought led him to the inception of TRIVA, a construction tech solution provider, instrumental in helping construction companies enhance their workers’ safety while streamlining operations.

However, when it comes to adoption of technology, the construction industry typically falls far behind. Thriving in a manpower-dependent environment, construction companies more often than not resist technological overhaul due to the amount of time, energy, resources, and money needed. As a means to reduce the intensity of tech ramps, Franco’s firm takes a unique route. TRIVA manufactures and offers smart safety tags that can be easily adhered to a construction worker’s hardhat, making it possible to passively monitor and warn when risk is imminent. “TRIVA’s smart safety tag is a patented IoT technology that is transforming safety by developing a connected worksite platform through a hybrid approach that uses traditional methods to convert analog information into digital,” says Franco.

TRIVA’s smart safety tags are as small as a quarter and are based on a technology that is inexpensive and disposable. The tags are designed and manufactured in-house and help users monitor worker’s safety, attendance, inventory records, and equipment performance. The data collected can be accessed by construction supervisors on a global dashboard and daily reports can be obtained with the click of a button. Additionally, workers can be instantly notified of an evacuation event. On-site foremen can automate roll calls at muster points, and know where to look if anyone is missing. TRIVA’s Connected Worksite platform handles redundant tasks, freeing time for the project managers to make proactive decisions based on data collected autonomously. This ability removes human error resulting from manually handling paperwork.

In addition, all the data that is collected from the smart safety tag is stored in the cloud, and with the right permissions, contractors can drill down from a map and view any project worldwide. The dashboard’s simple user interface follows the ‘three-click rule,’ which implies that a user should be able to find any information on the website with no more than three mouse clicks. In addition to hybrid IoT, the TRIVA platform will incorporate a PartnerLink layer that will allow third parties to link or develop other applications for event driven AI.

These advantages provided by TRIVA have benefited many organizations, and the association with Moss Construction is a testament to this. TRIVA’s smart safety tag technology has been implemented on various jobs to help monitor labor on the work site, along with the ability to manage their work progress. By using TRIVA, Moss has obtained additional visibility over resources and materials that allow for streamlined work management, and lower construction cost. This is one of the several success stories created by TRIVA.

Over the last year, the firm has created similar transformations for over 9000 users, and Franco aims to triple that number this year. “Our main focus will be honing our safety capabilities while continuing to build out the field platform,” adds Franco, and hints at a new office opening in Austin that raises their stakes for growth higher.
