Transition from Preventative Maintenance to Predictive Maintenance

It’s a regular day at the depot, bustling with maintenance personnel completing preventative maintenance (PM) inspections. Using a handheld tread gauge, which provides tread depth measurements at a single point-in-time, the personnel identify multiple tires that are nearing the targeted minimum safety tread depth. Armed only with their point-in-time measurements, and without any information about the tire’s treadwear rate, maintenance personnel must decide whether the tire will remain safe until the next inspection, which could be weeks away. This scenario often results in tires being changed before necessary or being left on for too long.

Fleet managers keen on improving tire performance without compromising safety can place their trust in Tyrata, Inc.’s IntelliTread® Drive-Over System solution.

The IntelliTread® Drive Over System automatically measures tire tread depth each time a vehicle drives over, and Tyrata.io AI analyzes the measurements and predicts when a tire will need to be replaced. This predictive ability enables true Preventative Maintenance to be implemented based on real-time tread wear data, which ensures tire safety and optimal tire use without comprising safety.

"Leveraging solid-state measurement techniques, Tyrata’s IntelliTread® Drive-Over System (DOS) functions as a simple two-inch speed bump that measures the tire tread every time the vehicle passes over it"

Tyrata is a tire sensor and data management company offering tire monitoring solutions for fleet managers, tire manufacturers, and automotive service centers. Catering to clients with fleets ranging from 60 to 120,000 vehicles, Tyrata collects, stores, and analyzes data to provide key analytics throughout the life of the tire.

“Tyrata is changing the world of tire management by centralizing and automating tire monitoring functions for fleet managers. Charging a nominal subscription fee per tire, we ensure that our system is cost-efficient. It is maintenance free and requires no installation by the customer,” says Dr. Jesko von Windheim, CEO of Tyrata.

Leveraging solid-state measurement techniques, Tyrata’s IntelliTread® Drive-Over System (DOS) functions as a simple two inch speed bump that measures the tire tread every time the vehicle passes over it.

The solution provides accurate measurements in dirt-covered and snow-packed environments, where optical solutions fail.

The collected data is stored in the cloud, analyzed, and displayed to the customer on the customizable Tyrata.io portal. DOS is typically deployed in depots where vehicles return after completing each trip.

Tried and tested by some of the most demanding fleet managers, Tyrata’s DOS has proven its value in terms of performance and scalability. One of the company’s clients, GoDurham, found it challenging to manually monitor the tires on its 60-bus public transit fleet. With vehicles returning to the depot late every night, it was only possible to monitor the tires’ health on Sunday nights. Not only was the client reliant on manual labor, but they were also shelling out $26,000 a year for manual tire monitoring.

By deploying Tyrata’s DOS, GoDurham was able to monitor the tires much more efficiently, on a daily basis, and make data driven tire maintenance decisions. After implementing DOS, GoDurham realized a 12 percent increase in tire efficiency, which also reduced the number of tires they purchased. By eliminating manual inspection costs and extending the life of their tires, GoDurham achieved net annual savings of approximately $60,000. This 12 percent tire life improvement also translated to a significant reduction in the client’s carbon footprint by 21,000 kg in CO2e emissions.

Tyrata is changing the world of tire management by centralizing and automating tire monitoring functions for fleet managers

To drive such results for all its clients, Tyrata follows a simple and straightforward onboarding process, to clearly understand fleet needs and get the system up and running within a few hours. Once the system is installed, Tyrata conducts fleet calibration in the week following installation, then the system will spend 2-4 weeks using AI to learn about the tires. After the calibration and system learning is complete, customers can monitor the tire tread data themselves using the portal, or let Tyrata do it on their behalf. When the tire hits certain thresholds, Tyrata sends alerts to help them proactively manage tire health.

In an industry where state-of-the-art tire monitoring still consists of infrequent, manual inspections, Tyrata envisions being the torchbearer of change to promote safer and more efficient tire monitoring. The company also helps clients fulfill their part toward sustainability by extending the average tire life and encouraging tire retreading.
