Software-Defined Services Meet AV Technology

Utelogy

Kevin Morrison, CEO
Today’s digital-first world is gradually transforming itself from being hardware-centric to becoming software-defined. Although the concept of ‘software-defined everything (SDx)’ is still considered to be in its nascent stage, the ability to manage a wide range of components virtually has brought about significant breakthroughs for companies in terms of performance and scalability. Beyond cost savings and improved productivity, SDx also brings agility to IT service delivery. At this juncture, California-based Utelogy came forth with a revolutionary idea of leveraging the advantages of SDx to control and manage audiovisual (AV) devices. “Our objective is to redefine the way AV media is deployed, controlled, and managed,” says Kevin Morrison, CEO of Utelogy.

Further explaining Utelogy’s unique approach, Morrison describes how AV devices are traditionally used in conference rooms and higher ed classrooms. Consider video conferencing systems that connect workers using numerous audiovisual devices like cameras, microphones and large displays. In a traditional environment, all the AV equipment needs to be controlled by an admin through a hardware console. However, the process can often turn out to be cumbersome and prone to temporary malfunctions. Simultaneously, it is also hard to monitor all the audiovisual devices individually to ensure optimum performance. “At Utelogy, we’ve created a software platform to offer an intuitive, affordable, and scalable alternative to the traditional hardware-based approach that requires proprietary programming,” says Morrison. Utelogy enables organizations to leverage their existing IT and AV infrastructure with its software-based platform that is network-smart to allow for remote deployment and support.

One of the critical components of Utelogy’s SDAV platform is its U-Manage service portal. “We help IT departments to manage, monitor, and scale their AV systems like any other IT system”, added Morrison.

Now organizations have the ability to view alerts and usage reports for rooms and all technology, including other control systems, as well as asset details like firmware versions and warranty reports.

Recently, a prominent educational institution in California collaborated with Utelogy to simplify monitoring of their AV devices across their campus. Before implementing the Utelogy platform, the campus faced significant challenges with the integration and maintenance of their existing technology due to the complexity and support issues. “They had a tough time replacing connected devices and re-integrating them with the existing AV system because of its proprietary nature,” says Morrison. This situation was costing them millions of dollars. However, with Utelogy’s platform, they could easily enable “Just-in-time AV” by deploying technology when and where it is needed.

Recently, the company extended its integrations to enable control and analytics for the popular Zoom Room video conferencing and Cisco’s Webex solution. Continuing to add value for the enterprise, Utelogy also recently released its REST API and Business Intelligence Data Connectors to enable further integration between enterprise systems. The REST API allows integrators and partners to extend the value of the management portal by taking that data and integrating to service ticketing systems while the Data Connectors deliver system data to BI tools for analysis, historical trends, and correlations. With all these significant developments and more to come, the company is well-equipped as workplace technology continues to evolve.
