Vū Systems: Offering a Revolutionary Long-distance Vision Technology

Every driver knows how difficult driving can be without clear visibility during rain or fog. Pilots have it much worse owing to the extreme, and rather abruptly occurring, weather conditions. Current enhanced flight vision systems (EFVS) have a short range and can only provide a vision for a few feet through clouds. On the other hand, the airline business model bases itself on “strictly sticking” to planned flight schedules. Any disruption in schedules can lead to losses, and adverse weather conditions and consequent flight schedule disruptions are a massive deterrent to the airline business’ bets and bargains.

Addressing this predicament is Vū Systems, an advanced imaging technology company, which brings Vū Cube sensors to the table that leverage passive millimeter-wave (PMMW) technology to eliminate the problem of limited, short-range visibility. The innovation gives a remarkable visual advantage to pilot, enabling them to see for at least two miles through clouds and fog. This allows pilots to land or take off in any weather conditions with minimal or no assistance from expensive and complicated ground infrastructure.

Vū Systems’ breakthrough next-generation vision system enables the timely departure and arrival of flights, which in turns reduces the air traffic congestion and makes a pilot’s job less stressful, safer and more manageable. The on-time arrival and departure of flights also enhances the traveling experience for the general public and saves the aviation industry millions, dramatically impacting profitability, increasing capacity, and access. This helps CIOs of aviation industries balance the ROI of legacy investments in technology with the capital and competitive costs of modernizing and integrating new technologies. Vū Cube also eliminates the need to build more runways. “We focus on increasing the utilization of existing assets and improving efficiencies rather than building new runways,” says Stedman Stevens, CEO of Vū Systems. In effect, Vū Cube enables aircraft manufacturers to have an advantage over their competitors as they can now achieve new levels in safety and all-weather operations for their aircraft.

Also, from the environmental and economic standpoint, Vū Systems helps to solve the issue of wasted fuel due to landing backlogs in lousy weather.

While fixed-wing aviation is our first product, we see significant opportunities to apply our innovation to build products in other market segments and industries

The Vū Cube can be integrated with existing vision technology and infrastructure as it is designed in such a way that it could be used to augment the first generation EFVS infrared (IR) cameras. Also, partnering with Saab, an aircraft company, Vū Systems has eliminated the two significant transitioning challenges of the market; the need for products to blend images into the flight display and for high performance and affordable head-up displays. Saab enabled the packaging of the Vū Cube sensor into its EFVS product. Saab products fully comply with FAA regulations, and thus, the partnership is a perfect fit for Vū Cube technology integration and production as it opens numerous expansion opportunities.

Exploring different segments of aviation, the company is planning to introduce helicopter products for all weather conditions. Furthermore, Vū Systems is looking forward to deploying its unmanned technology aircraft, drones, urban air mobility, shipping, and agriculture in the future. Also, the company is envisioning the application of technology for medical purposes, such as care assessment and treatment. It could enable a non-invasive screening for Basal and Squamous cell carcinomas. It would eliminate the need for biopsy as PMMW does not penetrate the skin. “While fixed-wing aviation is our first product, we see significant opportunities to apply our innovation to build products in other market segments and industries,” Stevens concludes.
