Argus’ core solution, the ready-to-embed Argus Intrusion Detection and Prevention System (IDPS) detects and prevents malicious activity on a vehicle’s Communication Area Network (CAN) Bus in real time. Built specifically for the automotive industry, Argus IDPS can be embedded on the automobile gateway or on an individual ECU without changing the existing architecture. It is especially unique in that it provides high performance detection and prevention using minimal memory footprint and CPU resources. These features along with its deep packet inspection (DPI) and patent-pending technologies prevent hacking of a vehicle’s safety-critical systems in real time. “The optional cloud infrastructure enables situational awareness on an intuitive dashboard, Over- The-Air (OTA) updates and operational threat intelligence, delivering cyber security throughout the vehicle’s lifespan,” says Ben-Noon.

As a trusted adviser to its customers, Argus also provides consulting services and works closely with customers to ensure cyber security is baked into the entire product lifecycle—from concept to production, delivery and service. “We do this through threat assessments, risk analyses, software architecture and code reviews, penetration testing, and field monitoring,” says Ben-Noon.

Founded in 2013, the company is considered an authority on automotive cyber security. Following a myriad of vulnerabilities uncovered by white hats and US Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal’s SPY Car Act of 2015, which proposes guidelines for regulating automotive cyber security, Argus was invited to participate in a closed door congressional committee to discuss the state of automotive cyber security.

Argus’ award-winning research team works with major automakers to prepare for and prevent attacks through assessments of potential attack scenarios across different operating systems, communication protocols and vehicle types. The team has already exposed substantial cyber security vulnerabilities. One critical vulnerability was recently found on an aftermarket telematics service, the Zubie connected car service. “By connecting Zubie’s aftermarket dongle to a vehicle’s OBD-II port, customers can connect their car to the internet to deliver real-time location, trip history, maintenance alerts, engine diagnostics and driving insights immediately to their smartphone,” explains Ben-Noon. Argus discovered vulnerabilities in the device that could lead to serious compromises of the locking system, dashboard instruments and safety-critical components such as the engine, brakes and steering. “We disclosed our findings to Zubie who responsibly addressed the issues prior to our joint announcement,” adds Ben-Noon.

Argus Cyber Security Wins “Automotive Cybersecurity Innovation of The Year” Award for its Outstanding Penetration Testing Technology

Argus’ game-changing penetration testing technology enables coverage guided fuzzing to detect vulnerabilities in binary code in embedded devices.

Argus Cyber Security, a global leader in cyber security for connected mobility, announced it has been awarded the “Automotive Cybersecurity Innovation of The Year” award in the annual AutoTech Breakthrough Awards.

As vehicles become increasingly software-driven and connected, their exposure to cyber risk increases. To address this risk and comply with regulations such as UNR 155 and GB/T, vehicle manufacturers need ways to verify that their vehicle software is free of vulnerabilities.

One common automatic testing technique is fuzzing, which sends multiple messages to a target system, such as a vehicle electronic control unit (ECU), until it triggers a bug. The ideal fuzzing method is coverage-guided fuzzing. However, coverage-guided fuzzing is typically out of reach for testing binary code of embedded software due to the time and effort involved during setup of emulation platforms. Now for the first time, vehicle manufacturers can cost-effectively test their embedded software, potentially find more vulnerabilities, and mitigate them before they cause damage.

“Argus patent-pending technology allows coverage-guided fuzzing in what would otherwise be black box security pen test activities.” said Yaron Galula, CTO Argus Cyber Security. “Prior to this innovation, it wasn’t feasible for vehicle manufacturers to use coverage-guided fuzzing for testing embedded devices without access to source code.”

This technology complements Argus Vehicle Vulnerability Management solution (VVM) which automates the monitoring, detection and mitigation of vulnerabilities in vehicle assets. With signed production projects to secure over 65 million vehicles, vehicle manufacturers are relying on Argus to help them understand their vehicle vulnerability risk exposure and respond fast.

US-Based EV Manufacturer Fisker Selects Argus as a Preferred Cyber Security Partner for Its Ocean SUV Product Line

Pioneering EV provider receives type approval certification for UNR 155 and Chinese GB/T regulations using the Argus CAN Intrusion Detection and Prevention System

Argus Cyber Security, a world leader in automotive cyber security, today announced that it has delivered multiple automotive cyber security products and services to Fisker Inc. (Fisker), a pioneering EV manufacturer driven by a mission to create the world's most emotional and sustainable electric vehicles. In particular, the Argus CAN IDPS product has enabled Fisker to achieve type approval certification for its revolutionary Fisker Ocean all-electric SUV product line.

OEMs and EV manufacturers of all sizes are ramping up their cyber security capabilities to help them comply with automotive cyber security regulations, including global directives like UNR 155, ISO/SAE 21434 and Chinese GB/T. UNR 155 requires OEMs to monitor incidents and risks to their vehicle fleets over the entire lifecycle. More specific UNR 155 and China's GB/T vehicle cybersecurity standards, stipulates detailed intrusion detection requirements and use cases for monitoring CAN bus networks.

"Compliance with UNR 155 and China's GB/T standards was a key component for our product launch strategy, including European and other non-US markets that require cyber security type approval" said Alexander Bermudez, CISO and DPO at Fisker. Using real-time, rule-based analysis of CAN traffic, Argus CAN IDPS enables Fisker to identify potential threats and anomalies, including new threats specific to EVs, and proactively mitigate risks before they impact vehicle operations. In the testing phase, Fisker and Argus validated anomalies to minimize false-positives in production, which in turn reduces the volume of events sent to the backend (VSOC) system.

In parallel to the CAN IDPS deployment, Argus' services team assisted Fisker with security certification for the integration of Amazon Alexa within the Fisker Ocean IVI system. Argus is the first automotive-focused security vendor to be certified by Amazon as an authorized security lab for Alexa auto integration
