Movable Type for AWS: Building Powerful Web Publishing Software
Founded in 2001, Movable Type is one of the first virtual blogging platforms developed to “share experiences” across the globe by enabling people to communicate in a two-way manner—posting and commenting. Now it has evolved from a blog tool to the true web content management system (CMS) platform, Nobuhiro (Nob) Seki, CEO explains, “With a lot of input and feedback from our web developers user community, we redefined our services from a blogging software to real web CMS platform. Compared to traditional enterprise CMS which is complicated and has enormous functions, advantage of Movable Type is taking over simplicity from blogger’s tool and also meets the needs of enterprise use.”Nob points out the lack of a resource for frequent CMS security maintenance is the new roadblock to solving customer’s problems. When a user looks at the complexity of digital infrastructure of most companies, he sees legacy server software and CMS. “Keeping all these systems updated timely is the magic bullet,” Nob says. “Software vulnerabilities, like Heartbleed, Shellshock and Poodle, have been in the news a lot in 2014. But unfortunately, we can see some web sites couldn't fix the issues yet. Today, web site forms the essential core of corporate marketing, service down will be a huge business opportunity loss.”
Six Apart’s new flagship product—Movable Type for AWS (Amazon Web Services), a solution for customers to easily keep the website secure and an OS image including Movable Type Application, but also providing AWS Marketplace. It comes with OS, application, web server, PSGI server, PHP and database optimized for creating web site with Movable Type. Six Apart continuously offers consistent security updates and new functions for Movable Type for AWS. Subscribers can retrieve the updates from the specific preset repository as same as OS itself.

“It is really easy to update their whole server with just only one commands. This means user can focus on their contents and not only their system.” Nob said.
As a static publishing platform, Movable Type places the page that is already built to the front-end server, enabling the user to access an already created page. The Huffington Post utilizes Movable Type to run their website. “This illustrates Movable Type’s flexibility, reliability and steadfastness of the product. We are confident about the solutions that we build, and our approach in supporting the customers,” he says. Nob also highlights the importance of choosing the right platform while selecting a product. For instance, having a website with a lot of highs and lows can lead to massive unplanned spikes in data traffic. By having the pages already built in a static publishing platform on cloud web server such as Movable Type for AWS, one can reduce costs and provide more stability in high traffic environments.
Moving forward, Six Apart’s goal is to continue to support customers with Movable Type, and develop the products in a slow and steady pace. “Our focus is on Movable Type for AWS because we believe that’s the future,” Nob concludes.
