Unlocking Fleet Potential through AI and Data Intelligence

Geotab

Mike Branch, Vice President of Data and Analytics
It’s no coincidence that data-driven services are transforming industries worldwide, especially in the connected fleet value chain, where organizations use data to provide superior, data-centric services to customers. One company at the forefront of this evolution is Geotab, a global leader in connected transportation solutions that offers actionable insights to improve fleet efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Geotab, which has over 4 million subscriptions and processes 75 billion data points daily, helps customers make informed decisions, increase productivity, and achieve sustainability goals. Vehicles worldwide act as sensors on wheels, providing clients with invaluable macro-level insights that allow them to delve deeper into trends like electrification, freight movement, and economic shifts. Through its agnostic, AI-driven platform, the firm converts real-time data from various sources into actionable insights for measurable business value.

Geotab’s FedRAMP-certified platform prioritizes security, data privacy, and trust, particularly for federal government customers in the US. Incorporating various privacy features has been essential due to the complexities of handling geospatial data and deriving macro-level insights from it while ensuring privacy compliance.

“Fueled by AI and data intelligence, our open platform empowers our employees and customers by granting swift access to insights via generative AI, thereby cultivating champions at every level,” says Mike Branch, Vice President of Data and Analytics at Geotab.

One of the firm’s standout features is its data connector. It seamlessly integrates client fleet and business data to uncover areas for operational and bottom-line improvements within popular BI tools like Tableau or PowerBI. Clients can simply enter their credentials on the platform to access sustainability reports, safety scorecards, and utilization dashboards—all consolidated into an analytics-ready model.

Data intelligence and AI have been built into the fiber of Geotab for many years. Its trusted generative AI copilot, Geotab Ace™, transforms data interactions to provide reliable protection and customized insights. Creating a universal dashboard for clients across various industries, including construction, rental car services, municipal services, and oil and gas, is challenging.

However, through Geotab Ace™, users can now easily inquire for information by asking questions like, “Which vehicles are the most and least productive?”

However, there is an increasing demand for fleet sustainability initiatives, particularly in transportation decarbonization and the transition to electric vehicles. In this regard, the Geotab platform helps clients identify and reduce idling, thereby minimizing emissions. On the other hand, customers who manage fleets comprising vehicles primed for electrification, like Ford F150s or transit vehicles, can leverage Geotab’s electric vehicle suitability assessment. This feature discerns the readiness of a client’s fleet for electrification, providing valuable insights for transitioning to electric vehicles.

Safety is Geotab’s main priority, as evidenced in the feedback from its global customer advisory group at the Connect conference in Las Vegas. The firm’s solutions aim to reduce collisions through AI technology, analyze driver behavior and operational conditions, estimate collision probability risks, and offer proactive safety measures. For instance, it can provide insights such as a 12 percent likelihood of collision occurring within the next hundred thousand miles, allowing fleets to take measures in safety management. As the firm refines the model, it will encompass additional factors, like video events, distance sensors, and weather conditions like rain or snow.

Fueled by AI and data intelligence, our open platform empowers our employees and customers by granting swift access to insights via generative AI, thereby cultivating champions at every level

Predictive maintenance is another key focus area. This is exemplified by Geotab’s Electrical Systems Rating (ESR), which predicts vehicle battery failures to mitigate downtime. The company’s recent routing and optimization advancements— announced at the Connect conference in February—introduce new capabilities in an economic engine. This technology ensures that the right people are deployed to the right locations, times, and costs, enhancing effectiveness. To achieve this, the company inputs workers’ skill sets, operational limitations, and hours of availability. The optimization engine then utilizes this data to generate the most efficient routes across a fleet network at optimal costs.

This technology is also particularly beneficial for field service operations, enhancing sustainability. The firm will also release a comprehensive Commercial Transportation Report that outlines the impact of various countries transitioning to electric vehicles in the commercial sector.

Geotab’s impact extends beyond technology, as seen in its work in Raleigh, U.S., which led to doubled safety scores and identified opportunities for fleet electrification within three months. This progress was made possible by using data and insights to measure regional driver safety. The enhanced safety metric played a crucial role in promoting safer driving practices. The city also used the firm’s vehicle data to pinpoint electrification opportunities and scale greener operations. Treading ahead, Geotab remains committed to unlocking actionable insights to boost fleet efficiency, safety, and sustainability, addressing current challenges and future needs.
