Luis Oliveira is a senior IT Leader with extensive experience delivering practical, cost-effective business solutions utilizing technology and innovation. At Guidant Measurement, he leads technology planning, budgeting and team management, while driving transformation, innovation and ensuring that applications and services are aligned with business goals.

In an interview with CIOReview, Oliveira shared his views on aligning IT strategy with business outcomes and balancing innovation with organizational priorities.

A Career Shaped by Experience

I began my career as a mainframe programmer in Brazil before moving to the U.S., where I continued working as a consultant focusing in application development.  

My first leadership opportunity came with Landry’s Restaurants. During my eleven years there, it expanded significantly to include more than 500 restaurants across multiple concepts, hotels, casinos and entertainment venues. I led the enterprise application initiative and oversaw the implementation of Oracle ERP.

Following the sale of one of its restaurant brands to a private equity group, I joined the newly formed company as vice president of IT. I built the IT department from the ground up, including infrastructure development, team building and enterprise systems implementation.

Several years later, I transitioned into healthcare, where I worked in both the clinical and academic areas. At UT Health my team supported an aggressive expansion of the physician organization through the acquisition of several practices. At Houston Methodist my team supported the researchers at the Academic Institute in their journey to advance healthcare, including during the COVID pandemic.

 We must identify the organization’s goals and challenges before selecting technologies that best support them. 

I currently serve at Guidant Measurement, a manufacturing company that produces measurement equipment for the oil and gas industry. I initially led enterprise applications and implemented SAP S4/HANA Public Cloud, and later was promoted to Director of IT. 

What I enjoy most about my career is working across industries, learning the unique challenges of each and applying the leadership and technology expertise I have built over the years.

Aligning IT Strategy with Business Outcomes

One of the most important aspects of IT leadership is understanding that technology exists to support the business. IT teams need to remain focused on helping business units solve problems, improve operations and achieve strong results. Leaders must maintain an efficient and reliable technology environment. 

At Guidant Measurement, manufacturing highly specialized equipment creates significant operational and data complexity. Strict technical and regulatory requirements make product catalogs, parts catalogs and metadata management sophisticated. We collaborate with business experts to ensure data and processes are structured correctly.

Balancing Innovation with Business Priorities

Technology is evolving fast, and we should balance speed and innovation while maintaining governance and security controls. Placing the right guardrails reduces the risk of cyber incidents, data leaks and loss of intellectual property while enabling employees to adopt new technologies safely.

We must identify the organization’s goals and challenges before selecting technologies that best support them. It is also important to recognize that IT is primarily a support function rather than a direct revenue-generating area of the business.

AI has become the dominant technology conversation across industries, and we are expected to shape the organization’s overall strategy and approach to adoption. It is important to take a disciplined approach by identifying practical, tangible use cases where AI can deliver measurable value. IT teams are focused on enabling secure access, establishing governance frameworks and ensuring sensitive company data remains protected.

Advice for Aspiring IT Leaders

Build strong relationships with your business peers because effective collaboration helps technology leaders better understand operational challenges and align IT initiatives with broader business objectives.

IT teams must recognize that their role is ultimately to support the organization and help solve business problems rather than pursue technology for its own sakeIT leaders must begin by clearly defining the problem they are trying to solve. Once the business need is understood, they can evaluate the available technologies and determine which solution is most appropriate.
