Journey to AMA: Expertise in Action

The diversity of my career experiences has brought me to my current role as Manager of Procurement and Contract Services at the Alberta Motor Association (AMA). In my previous role as Director of Procurement, I developed a centralized procurement team, built a Strategic Sourcing team, introduced supportive software, and implemented third-party risk management (TPRM)—all key activities relevant to my current responsibilities.

My background in tactical and strategic procurement, contract negotiations, vendor management, and risk mitigation across various spend categories, including IT, Facilities Management, Marketing, and Professional Services, equips me well for this position. My progression in leadership roles across different industries has prepared me for success at AMA.

"Transformation in the consumer services industry is being driven by key trends and technological advancements, notably Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data and Analytics."

I pursued the role at AMA to establish a centralized procurement function, aiming to deliver value through effective spend management, risk mitigation, process efficiency, and cost savings. I am excited to introduce new systems that will enhance our procurement practices.

Transformative Trends and Technologies Shaping the Consumer Services Industry

Transformation in the consumer services industry is driven by key trends and technological advancements, notably AI, ML and Data and Analytics.

AI and ML enhance customer experiences through personalized recommendations, chatbots, and predictive analytics. These technologies help businesses understand consumer behavior, optimize service delivery, and improve efficiency. AI-powered chatbots, for instance, provide 24/7 support, allowing human agents to focus on complex issues. Machine learning algorithms predict potential problems, improving reliability and reducing unexpected disruptions. AI also facilitates targeted communications, boosting consumer satisfaction and loyalty.

Leveraging data from customer interactions, especially through AI-powered assistants, enables businesses to personalize marketing efforts and improve customer service, ultimately driving stronger customer relationships.

Key Challenges and Strategies in IT Procurement

In IT procurement, we face several significant challenges in the coming years:

Keeping Pace with Technological Changes: Rapid advancements in AI and ML demand continuous learning for procurement teams. Implementing advanced procurement software is essential to stay competitive.

Cybersecurity Threats: The increasing prevalence of cyber threats poses serious risks. Strengthening cybersecurity measures, focusing on third-party risk management, and conducting regular audits can mitigate these risks. A risk-based approach ensures appropriate rigor in assessing third-party relationships.

Global Supply Chain Disruptions: Geopolitical tensions and natural disasters have intensified supply chain challenges, impacting product availability. Diversifying the supplier base, building strong supplier relationships, and developing alternative supply arrangements are critical mitigation strategies. Contingency plans for critical products are equally important.

Budget Constraints: Balancing the adoption of cutting-edge technologies with budget limitations can be difficult. Strategic sourcing, category management, negotiating longer-term contracts, and leveraging data analytics to identify cost savings are key strategies.

Talent Development: The demand for skilled procurement professionals, especially those proficient in digital and analytics tools, is growing. Investing in talent development, offering competitive compensation, and fostering a culture of innovation are crucial to attracting and retaining top talent.

Leveraging a Modern and Secure Technology Stack

We leverage a robust and modern suite of tools to support operations and drive innovation. This includes cloud-based services, a microservices architecture, and containerization to ensure scalability and flexibility. We utilize a range of programming languages and frameworks tailored to specific development needs. Security and compliance remain top priorities, supported by advanced tools and protocols to safeguard our systems and data.

Best Practices for Adopting Emerging Technologies in Consumer Services

Adopting emerging technologies in the consumer services industry requires thoughtful planning and execution:

Align with Customer Needs: Start by identifying how the technology will address customer needs and enhance their experience. Surveys and feedback analysis can help ensure alignment.

Comprehensive Training: Provide thorough training to improve adoption rates and maximize the impact of new technologies. Neglecting training often leads to underutilization and resistance.

Data Quality and Governance: High-quality data is essential for technologies like AI and ML to function effectively. Establishing strong data governance frameworks is critical.

Scalability and Flexibility: Choose technologies that are scalable and adaptable to future needs. Avoid rigid systems that may hinder responsiveness to market changes.

Human Interaction Balance: Balance automation with personalized human interactions to maintain an engaging and empathetic customer experience.

Total Cost of Ownership: Account for all costs, including licensing, implementation, maintenance, and training, to avoid unforeseen financial challenges.

By adhering to these practices, organizations can maximize the value of their investments in emerging technologies while enhancing customer satisfaction.
