Rosemary Butterly, VP- HR

Rapid changes in technology have significantly impacted various organizational functions, including Human Resources. Inherent in Human Resource’s role within a company are the sharing of information with employees, monitoring information and trends, and encouraging employee collaboration at work. Environmental changes such as the growth of a global workforce, virtual teams, and telecommuting have added to the need for Human Resources to embrace technology to facilitate its organizational role. Increased demand for information, data, and Human Resources analytics has also strongly influenced the Human Resources function.

Human Resource is challenged to meet the changing expectations of its workforce. The new millennial workforce is comfortable with technology and wants to be part of an organization that embraces it. Traditional methods for Human Resources communications—newsletters, bulletin boards, and handbooks—are one-directional. New approaches to employee communications include collaborative work tools, social networks, wikis, and blogs. These methods are interactive, dynamic, and flexible.

Such tools support a decentralized global workforce and collaboration in a 24/7 world. So, what does this mean to the Human Resources professional? We need to stay current on developments in technology so we can continue to see its strategic value. Human Resources should use technology to enhance and improve HR efficiencies. To embrace technology necessitates that Human Resources professionals develop new skills to gather, sort, interpret, and analyze information. And Human Resources leaders need to continually be aware of the effect that technology has on its workforce.
