On September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro I, then Prince Regent of Brazil, mounted on a white horse on  the banks of the Ipiranga River, drew his sword from its sheath, raised it towards the sky, and  proclaimed: "Independence or Death." This phrase, the most important in Brazilian history, symbolized a decisive moment for the country. But what would be the most important phrase for CIOs in a time when technology is opening up a vast array of innovations and disruptions?

"Innovation or Death" is the phrase that, in my view, best represents this challenge.

Business history is full of examples of companies that failed to anticipate and respond to market changes. Cases like Kodak, Blockbuster, Nokia, and Xerox are widely known. Another notable example is Toys "R" Us, one of the largest toy retailers in the world, which failed to adapt to the growing online market. The lack of innovation in its sales strategy and customer experience led to its bankruptcy in 2017 and the closure of most of its stores in 2018. These emblematic cases send a clear message: no company is immune to the consequences of inertia.

Digital transformation is no longer a strategic choice but a vital necessity to maintain competitiveness and relevance

Innovation is not just about introducing new products or technologies but about fostering a culture of continuous adaptation. Companies that thrive in the digital age are those that constantly challenge the status quo, reimagine their processes and business models, and are willing to learn quickly from their mistakes. In this context, digital transformation is no longer a strategic choice but a vital necessity to maintain competitiveness and relevance.

CIOs, as technology leaders, have the opportunity to play a leading role in innovative processes,  being at the forefront of the digital revolution and responsible for promoting innovations that not  only disrupt the market but also improve organizational efficiency. By nature, being the strategic  leaders most familiar with and closest to technology, whether in its mature or emerging state,  these professionals carry the honor and responsibility of acting as catalysts and promoters of  discussions that allow for understanding the potential of each technology and how it can influence  business in the corporations they serve.

However, it is crucial to recognize that for technologies to be implemented effectively, maximizing  their potential in terms of innovation, operational efficiency, compliance, security, and customer  service, they need solid foundations. Structural projects are often necessary to create the right  environment where new technologies can be successfully integrated. The adoption of  technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) depends not only on sophisticated algorithms but also  on a robust data infrastructure. Without this foundation, AI can lead to failures or suboptimal  results that may even harm the organization. Therefore, the CIO's role includes not only promoting

Innovations but also leading the construction of the necessary foundations for these innovations  to thrive, ensuring the company is prepared to fully capitalize on new technological opportunities.

CIOs must keep a close eye on emerging technologies that continue to offer significant potential  for transforming businesses. Among them, I highlight omnichannel, which integrates all  communication and sales channels of a company, providing the customer with a cohesive and  continuous experience. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another mature technology already  transforming businesses, automating processes, predicting trends, and personalizing offerings on  a large scale. Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is also a fully mature technology, enabling the  automation of repetitive tasks and freeing up human resources for higher-value activities.

In addition to these, emerging technologies such as Quantum Computing, Blockchain, Extended  Reality (XR) Technologies, and 5G combined with IoT are creating opportunities and challenges  for companies. CIOs who keep up with these innovations will be better positioned to lead their  organizations to success.

"Innovation or Death" is not just a catchy phrase, but an imperative in the digital age. New  technologies form a complex web of opportunities that, when properly harnessed, can transform  businesses in myriad ways. Companies that do not adopt this mindset risk being left behind,  vulnerable to being overtaken by the market.

However, for this transformation to be possible, it is crucial that companies see technology not as  a cost center, but as a driver of growth and innovation. Visionary organizations are partnering with  their CIOs to lead significant changes, adopting agile methodologies and promoting a culture of  experimentation. True disruption begins when companies not only talk about innovation but also  create the necessary conditions for it to flourish, providing the space and resources to turn the  future into reality.
